Biography

"You have been telling the people
that this is the Eleventh Hour.
Now you must go back and tell the people
that this is THE HOUR. And there are things
to be considered:

Where are you living?
What are you doing?
Where is your water?

Know your garden. It is time to speak your Truth.
Create your community. And do not look
outside yourself for the leader. This could be a good time.
There is a River flowing now very fast.
It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid.
They will try to hold onto the shore. They will
feel they are being torn apart, and they will
suffer greatly. Know the River has its destination.
The Elders say we must let go of the shore, push off
into the middle of the River. Keep our eyes open
and our head above the water.
See who is there with you and celebrate.
At this time in history, we are to take nothing personally,
least of all ourselves. For the moment that we do,
our spiritual growth and journey come to a halt.

Gather yourselves. Banish the word "struggle"
from your attitude and your vocabulary.
All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner
and in celebration.

We are the ones we've been waiting for."

Inspiration

Alfie Kohn
Brilliant scholarship on children's intrinsic motivation for learning including well researched articles on the case against standards and testing. My educational philosophy is fully aligned.

Apollo Alliance
A nation-wide coalition of labor unions, environmental groups and community-based organizations convened to pursue a cooperative, state by state agenda of investment in renewable energy and energy efficiency to create good jobs, achieve energy independence, revitalize underserved and rural communities and improve our environment. Coalition partners endorse the Apollo Alliance Ten Point Platform.

Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education
Association of colleges and universities working to advance sustainable thinking and practice throughout higher education in North America.

Awakening Earth
Duane Elgin's website packed with insightful articles on building a sustainable and compassionate future. Duane's book, “The Promise Ahead” started me on this path of possibility. If we get busy, that is.

Center for New American Dream
Resources for changing our patterns of consumption to improve our quality of life, protect the environment and promote social justice.

Climate Solutions
Working to stop global warming at the earliest point possible by helping the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia become world leaders in practical and profitable solutions.

Community Food Security Coalition
Building sustainable, local and regional food systems grounded in the principles of justice, democracy, and sustainability. This is where I first got it. The “foodshed” is interdependent with the “watershed.”

Conversation Café
Method for hosting community conversations in a civil society. These basic guidelines have proved useful again and again in building from conversation to grassroots democracy, by the people, of the people, for the people… just talking it through.

Coop-America
Practical, strategic steps for using our collective consumer power for social, ecological, and economic change. This is where I pick up tips for how to vote with my wallet.

David Suzuki Foundation
Activist or just plain active? There is work to be done in Canada and the David Suzuki Foundation is the leading voice for honesty and citizen engagement, working to find ways for society to live in balance with the natural world that sustains us. Focusing on four program areas: oceans and sustainable fishing, climate change and clean energy, sustainability, and the Nature Challenge. The Foundation uses science and education to promote solutions that conserve nature and help achieve sustainability within a generation.

Earth Charter
Guidelines for a constitution of the world now adopted by several northwest cities. This is my ethical framework.

Ecological Economics
This breakthrough conceptual framework is the new economics for the 21st century. Based at the University of Vermont, the Gund Institute is developing, testing, and implementing innovative methods and models that reflect the need to integrate the social, built, natural, and human capital components of our world.

Ecotrust
Building Salmon Nation; a place where people and wild salmon thrive. Five integrated program areas include; Native Programs, Fisheries, Forestry, Food and Farms, and Citizenship. Northwest champions of the emerging conservation economy. There are 15,000,000 citizens of the region we call Salmon Nation. This number is growing by 22 people an hour. How will we work together towards sustainable prosperity?

Ecological Footprint
Fascinating and frightening self-assessment on personal consumption of Earth's resources. At my current consumptive rate, it would take 3.5 planets worth of natural resources if everyone else in the world lived the way I have been living. Time to grow up and think through these systems I have been taking for granted.

Food Alliance
Creates market incentives for adoption of sustainable agricultural practices and educates business leaders and other food system stakeholders on the benefits of sustainable agriculture. Food Alliance was founded in 1997 through a collaborative initiative by Oregon State University, Washington State University, and the Washington State Department of Agriculture.

Friends of the Cedar River Watershed
My local watershed membership group. This is where my drinking water comes from. How could I not be a member? Are you a member of your local watershed group?

National Wildlife Federation
Among many other programs the National Wildlife Federation works with local communities to officially certify your back yard, school yard or entire community as a wildlife habitat. My back yard is one of them. To date, in the state of Washington, there are 1,953 certified Backyard Wildlife Habitat sites, 43 certified Schoolyard Habitats sites and one entire certified community.

People for Puget Sound
Working to protect and restore the health of Puget Sound and the Northwest Straits through education and action. I live here, so of course I signed up to be a member.

Positive Futures Network; YES! Magazine
The journal of positive futures. You bet I subscribe. This is what the news would look like if we stopped being so interested in the daily tragedies we generate and more invested in the possibilities that civil society generates.

Redefining Progress
Local debates over what, how much, and where to develop, along with what form development should take, remain highly politicized, and, as such, cry out for impartial analysis. To meet this need, Redefining Progress developed its Scenarios for Sustainability (S2) toolkit. S2 provides decision makers with quantitative information about the degree to which alternative land use planning and policy options achieve environmental, economic, and social sustainability objectives.

Sightline Institute
Lively, clearheaded, research and communication center working to bring about sustainability--a healthy, lasting prosperity grounded in place. Nonpartisan and wholly independent, Sightline's only ideology is commitment to the shared values of strong communities, fair markets, and responsible stewardship. They monitor the Northwest's progress toward a healthy, lasting prosperity with the Cascadia Scorecard, an index of seven key trends shaping the future of the Northwest. The Scorecard provides regular progress reports on the region, and, by spotlighting successes inside and outside Cascadia, helps provide a practical vision for a better Northwest. The Scorecard is updated in an annual book, in other reports, and via blog, the Daily Score.

Sustainable Industries Journal
